Idioms with the word ‘face’:
1. to come face to face with is to meet someone suddenly, especially when you are frightened of him. e.g. I turned the corner and came face to face with a large, fierce-looking cop. 2. sb’s face doesn’t fit used in order to say that someone is not considered suitable to work with or belong to a group or organization because he is different from other people in it. e.g. Carl always felt that his face didn’t fit Oxford.
If your face doesn’t fit they won’t hire you. 3. sth is written all over sb’s face
used to say that someone’s expression shows very clearly what one is thinking or feeling. e.g. Harlan spoke of his hopes for the future, but disappointment was written all over his face.
My cheeks burned and I knew I had guilt written all over my face. 4. to keep a straight face meansto be able to continue looking serious even though you want to laugh. e.g. Jan struggled to keep a straight face as our mother gave us a long talk on how to behave towards young men. 5. to stuff your face colloquial: to eat a lot in a short time.
