Пример: Translating from one language to another has been accomplished by computer – перевод

с одного языка на другой был выполнен компьютером.

Прочтите и переведите следующие предложения, обращая внимание на герундий в функции подлежащего:

1. Geomarketing can give consumers useful local information.

2. Programming is breaking a task down into small steps.

3. Teleworking is increasing so more and more people have an office at home and aren’t computing

to an office.

4. Alphabetical filing is very popular. To use it in office is particularly suitable.

5. Maintaining all of this and providing helpdesk services for our customers also costs us a lot of money.

6. Tracking is following the progress of a moving vehicle or person.

7. Broadcasting has long used antennae to transmit images and sound using the

radio spectrum.

8. Saving your work on a computer is of great importance.

10. Конструкция «Cложное подлежащее».

Сочетание существительного в общем падеже (или местоимения в именительном падеже) с инфинитивом с частицей to (или причастием) образуют субъектный инфинитивный оборот (сложное подлежащее). Между существительным и инфинитивом находится определенного вида сказуемое.

Пример: All bodies² are known¹ to possess³ weight⁴ – известно, что все тела обладают весом.

Различают три типа этого оборота:

1. Между существительным и инфинитивом находятся глаголы-характеристики в форме

страдательного залога (см. пример, приведенный выше): to say (is/are said) – говорить, to know (is/are known)- знать, to find (is/are found) - находить, обнаружив ать, to expect (is/are expected) - ожидать, to believe (is/are believed)- считать, полагать, to consider (is/are considered) – cчитать, to think (is/are thought) - думать, считать, to suppose (is/are supposed) – предполагать, полагать, to assume (is/are assumed)- полагать, предполагать, to state (is/are stated) - заявлять и некоторые другие.

При переводе предложения с таким оборотом, сказуемое английского предложения выносится в начало предложения и переводится неопределенно-личным предложением (главное предложение); подлежащее же английского предложения становится подлежащим, а инфинитив или причастие - сказуемым дополнительного придаточного предложения, которое вводится союзами что или чтобы, иногда как для сложного подлежащего с причастием. Время сказуемого придаточного предложения определяется с учетом времени английского предложения и формы инфинитива или причастия.

Примеры: The lifetime of the equipment² is assumed¹ to be 30 years³ - предполагают/предполагается, что срок службы оборудования составит 30 лет.

This phenomenon² is considered¹ as having arisen³ from excessive heating - считается, что это явление возникло в результате (из-за) чрезмерного нагрева.

2. Между существительным и инфинитивом располагаются глаголы в форме

действительного залога: to seem - казаться, представляться, to appear – оказываться, казаться (в составе этого оборота теряет значение появляться), to prove – оказываться
(в составе этого оборота теряет значение доказывать), to turn out – оказываться, to happen – оказываться ( частотеряет значение случаться), to occur – оказываться ( теряет значение случаться.

Пример: In today’s complex world communications² proved¹ to be³ not secure⁴ – оказалось, что в нынешнем сложном мире коммуникации не являются безопасными.

3. Между существительным и инфинитивом находятся словосочетания: to be likely- вероятно, to be unlikely - маловероятно, невероятно, to be sure – несомненно, безусловно, to be certain- несомненно, безусловно.

Пример: The instrument² is not likely¹ to be damaged³, if all rules are followed⁴ - мало- вероятно, что прибор будет поврежден, если мы будем соблюдать все предписания.

13. In today’s complex world, technical skills and negotiating skills appear to be both critical.

14. Competition between handset suppliers is said to be good.

16. Traditionally, telecoms companies happened to make most of their profits from voice calls.

17. Most TV viewers are sure to need an aerial pointing in the right direction.

18. Windows is unlikely to remain the dominant force in software.
