THE ATTRIBUTE

UNIT 1. TYPES OF ATTRIBUTES

The Attribute is a secondary part of the sentence which communicates any property, quality or characteristic that can be ascribed to a person or thing.

 

Ex.1. Point out the attributes and appositions, state their kinds, explain the semantic relations expressed by them. Translate into Russian.

 

1. On the third day there was sudden excitement down at the bend. 2. The landscape class, with stools and easels and sketch-boxes, tramped off twice a week to some vantage point to indulge in plain-air painting. 3. Their next season’s crop was threatened too, for the pump­ing plant could not operate. 4. Oh, that never-to-be-forgotten summer in the Golden Valley! 5. We have many ques­tions to discuss before we part, my friends. 6. Samuel Chealy, the then President of the firm, was definitely against the dubious deal.

 

 

The classification of attributes according to the semantic relations with the head word

 

1. the non-appositive attribute denotes a quality of the noun:

I saw a small girl standing in the goldfish pond.

 

2. the appositive attribute gives another name to the noun (for example, titles, positions, location)

Our first dog, a spaniel, was very fond of the baby.

Doctor Smith is in the surgery now.

1. descriptive: He showed us a book opened at the first page.

2. limiting: The candles lighted in the living room looked very gay.

 

Ex.3. Use the proper article. Point out the nouns which have a limiting attribute.
