Russia) is one of the largest countries in the world. The country is situated both in Europe and Asia. Its area is over 17 million square kilometers.

The population of Russia is about 150 million people. It is a multi-national state.

The capital of Russia is Moscow, its political, administrative, cultural, scientific and educational centre. It is one of the greatest and most beautiful cities of the world.

The relief of the country is various. There are mountains, hills, lowlands and deserts there. There are great forests in Siberia. The Urals are the natural boundary between Europe and Asia. The most important rivers are the Volga, the Ob, the Yenissey and others. Baikal is the deepest lake in the world. The Black Sea, the Caspian Sea and the Baltic Sea coasts are popular holiday-making places. The highest mountains are the Altai and the Caucasus.

The climate of Russia is different. In the central European part it is continental with frosts and snow in winter and hot summers. In the west the climate is mild and wet. In the south summers may be very hot and snow is rare.

Russia is rich in material and energy resources; it develops different industries.

The Russian Federation is a constitutional state headed by President. The government consists of three branches: legislative, executive and judicial.

Our country has a multiparty system.

Moscow is the capital of Russia. It is situated in the centre of the European part of Russia on the Moskva River. It has a population of over 9 million people. Its territory covers 1000 square kilometres.

Moscow is more than eight centuries old. It was founded in 1147. It is the largest city in the country and one of the most important industrial, political, cultural and scientific centres in the world.

Moscow is famous for its places of interest, such as the Red Square, the Kremlin – the seat of the Russian government, the Tretyakovsky Gallery, the Historical Museum and many others. Many beautiful monuments and parks, fashionable shops and modern hotels, theatres and churches decorate the city. The Kremlin, the Red Square, the State Historical Museum, the Garden Ring, are the centre of the city and the historical heart of the capital.

Moscow is the headquarters of important financial, commercial and banking organizations.

Moscow is a large educational centre. There are more than eighty Universities there. Moscow State University is the biggest of them.

Theatres, music and art are important in the city’s life.
