WASHINGTON - THE CAPITAL OF THE USA

When after the War for Independence the thirteen British colonies on the American continent became states and decided to join in a union, there was much discussion about the capital of the new country. It was finally decided to cut a hundred square miles from the states of Maryland and Virginia and to build a model capital in that place. The hundred square miles are known as the District of Columbia and are not part of any one state but Federal land. It was natural that the capital should receive the name of Washington - after the name of the commander-in-chief of the American army in the War for Independence who became the first President of the Union.

President Washington himself took an active part in choosing the place for the capital and decided that the city should be built on the north bank of the Potomac River.

The centre of the city is the Capitol Building. Four avenues radiate from the Capitol dividing the city into four parts. A series of squares appear at different intervals, and diagonal avenues radiate from these. All the diagonal avenues are named after different states of the Union, but the longest and the straightest is Massachusetts Avenue which cuts the city in half. From the Capitol to the White House (the official residence of the President) runs a broad Pennsylvania Avenue, about a mile and a half long. This is the avenue used for processions and parades.

All the main buildings, that make Washington interesting, are to be found in groups. The Capitol Hill is perhaps the most important for it is the seat of the government. The Capitol is the highest building in Washington, a city without skyscrapers. There are many interesting and beautiful monuments in Washington. Of these the most well-known are: the Washington Monument - a tall obelisk, the highest stone structure in the city, the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, and others. At the Arlington National Cemetery is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Решение.

I. ВАШИНГТОН – СТОЛИЦА США.

Когда после Войны за независимость тринадцать британских колоний Американского континента решили объединиться, было много обсуждений относительно столицы нового государства. В итоге было решено отделить сто квадратных миль от штатов Мэриленд и Виргиния и возвести там образцовую столицу. Эти сто квадратных миль известны как округ Колумбия и не относятся ни к какому штату, а являются федеральной землей. Вполне естественно, что столица получила имя Вашингтон – в честь главнокомандующего американской армией в Войне за независимость, который стал первым президентом союза.

Президент Вашингтон самолично принимал активное участие в выборе места для столицы и решил, что город должен быть основал на северном берегу реки Потомак.

Центром города является здание Капитолия. От него расходятся четыре авеню, разделяющие город на четыре части. На разных промежутках появляется ряд площадей, от которых берут начало диагональные авеню. Все диагональные авеню названы в честь различных штатов союза, а самая длинная и прямая – Массачусетс-авеню – разделяет город пополам. От Капитолия до Белого дома (официальной резиденции президента) ведет широкая Пенсильвания-авеню, растянувшаяся примерно на полторы мили. Эта дорога используется для процессий и парадов.

Все основные здания, придающие интерес Вашингтону, расположены группами. Капитолийский холм, вероятно, наиболее важный, поскольку это место пребывания правительства. Капитолий является самым высоким зданием в Вашингтоне, городе, где нет небоскребов. В Вашингтоне очень много интересных и красивых памятников. Среди наиболее известных – Монумент Вашингтона – высокий обелиск, самая высокая конструкция из камня в городе, Мемориал Линкольна, Мемориал Джефферсона и другие. На Арлингтонском национальном кладбище расположена могила неизвестного солдата.
