Robots vs Teachers.

There is no doubt that education and the learning process has changed since the introduction of computers: The search for information has become easier and amusing, and connectivity has expedited the data availability. So In the future, more and more of us will learn from social robots, especially kids learning pre-school skills and students of all ages studying a new language.

This is just one of the scenarios that looks at a " new science of learning”.

We humans are born immature and naturally curious, and become creatures capable of highly complex cultural achievements — such as the ability to build schools and school systems that can teach us how to create computers that mimic our brains.

With a stronger understanding of how this learning happens, scientists are coming up with new principles for human learning, new educational theories and designs for learning environments. And social robots are the one and may be the main invention of scientists - robots have a potentially growing role in these future learning environments. The mechanisms behind these sophisticated machines apparently complement some of the mechanisms behind human learning.

Social robots are being used on an experimental basis already to teach various skills to preschool children, including the names of colors, new vocabulary words and simple songs. And in the future, robots will only be used to teach certain skills, not all subjects and theories. Teaching is probably the most challenging role for artificial intelligence. It is a creative role and to teach well you really have to understand the person you're teaching.

But robot teachers can be cost-effective compared to the expense of paying a human teacher, there will be soon no role for teachers in the classroom, especially in such countries like South Corea, where it may be better to have a telepresence robot from a highly skilled teacher than to have just an average teacher in the classroom and pay him a lot of money.

Moreover this type of technology can bring many types of teaching that would otherwise be unavailable into more classrooms and the government is pressing ahead with plans to expand its robot learning.

As a consequence, some months ago a social robot was represented in South Corea - the English Jockey aka EngKey as an interactive robot that enables english teachers to teach students from thousands of miles away. The robot uses a human-like avatar on the screen, but the teachers aren’t actually seen, it does however mimic the teacher’s facial expressions by the use of a camera. Inventors said that the educational robot system indeed helps increase students' interest and self-motivation in studying English and improves their English skills.

But if children are looked after by robots for too long, in almost exclusive care, it would give them attachment disorders. There is no understanding in robots, there is just processing.

Despite all this positive facts about robots, for now, teachers don't have to be worried about being replaced in the classroom - due to the limitations on the current robotic technologies, robots cannot completely supplant human teachers in the educational field.

Still, children clearly learn best from other people and playgroups of peers, not from the robots, although it is said that robots are very helpful to enhance the concentration capability of children in class.

As computers are becoming a common tool for teaching, teachers should be more aware of their role as guides in the acquisition of knowledge rather than transmitters of facts. The expertise of a teacher in how to explain and adapt complex concepts to different individuals and to be able to determine what the specifics needs of each individual are.

To sum up, in my personal view, teachers play and will play an important role in the classroom, especially at the primary level. No matter how complex computers become, there will be no replacement for the human interaction, but in the way haw this interaction takes place.
