III. Comment on the following:

  1. In matters of grave importance, style, not sincerity is the vital thing. (Gwendolen)
  2. Where questions of self-sacrifice are concerned, men are infinitely beyond us. They have moments of physical courage of which we women know absolutely nothing.
  3. Hesitation of any kind is a sign of mental decay in the young, of physical weakness in the old.
  4. Three addresses always inspire confidence, even in tradesmen.
  5. We live in the age of surfaces.
  6. The two weak points in our age are its want of principle and its want of profile. Style largely depends on the way the chin is worn. They are worn very high just at present.
  7. Never speak disrespectfully of society. Only people who can’t get into it do that.
  8. I am not in favour of long engagements. They give people the opportunity of finding out each other’s character before marriage, which is never advisable.
  9. He has nothing, but he looks everything.
  10. No woman should be quite accurate about her age. It looks so calculating. London is full of women of the very highest birth who have, of their own free choice, remained thrity-five for years.
  11. Lady Bracknell: Is this Miss Prism a female of repellent character, remotely concerned with education? Chasuble: She is the most cultivated of ladies, and the very picture of respectability.

Lady Bracknell: It is obviously the same person.

  1. If you are not too long, I will wait here for you all my life.
  2. I never change except in my affections.
  3. The General was essentially a man of peace, except in domestic life.
  4. It is a terrible thing for a man to find out suddenly that all his life he has been speaking nothing but the truth.
