An Example: Edgar Allan Poe

In the accompanying example we provide a glimpse at some of the resources embedded into an electronic book entitled Edgar Allan Poe: Selected Works (Bookworm, 1996). Text on this example page, from the famous poem " The Raven, " is in two colors, black and red. The red text has links to embedded resources called annotations, which are identified to the reader in pop-up windows when the cursor touches that portion of the screen. Portrayed here is an illustrative resource (the picture of the raven) and an instructional resource (information about the symbolism of the raven). Other types of annotations include such things as interpretations (a translational resource), information about literary themes (an instructional resource), and analyses by literary critics (enrichment resources). Annotations can be text, images, sound, or video.

The bookmark-like palette down the left side of the page provides easy access to a variety of other resources. Below the select tool and trash can (top row) are buttons to the program's " information desk" (on the left) and " dictionary" (on the right). The information desk is primarily a navigational tool and the dictionary is a translational resource that allows the reader to access a definition and pronunciation for any word in the text. In the third row are buttons for " narration, " a translational resource that provides a digitized reading of the text, and " notebook, " a notational resource that allows the reader to take notes from anywhere in the document.

In the fourth row are buttons for " global find, " a navigational tool to enable searches for specific words across all of Poe's works included in this electronic book. Next to the global find button is one that leads to the work's " table of contents, " a summarizing resource. In the next row are two additional search tools, one allowing access to all text resources across documents (annotations, interpretations, etc.) and one allowing access to all available media resources (images, graphics, and sound).

The remaining four buttons provide access to four notational resources. The first is " margin notes, " a tool that allows the reader to make personal notes on the page being read. These notes can be in the form of text (marked by an icon such as the pencil in the righthand corner of page), image, sound, or video (marked by appropriate icons). The second notational resource is the " highlighter, " a tool that allows a reader to highlight selected sections of the text with any of several colors. All sections highlighted in a specific color can later be " collected" and put into a single file, perhaps in preparation for writing a paper or studying for a test. The third notational resource is the " bookmark." This tool allows the reader to mark the page for later reference (see tabs to the right of the page) and to indicate why the page was marked by giving it a title. The last notational resource is " create annotation, " which allows students and teachers to create their own annotations and attach them to a section of text. Annotations can be in the form of more text, images, sound, or video and, once created, will appear in pop-up windows attached to red text in the same way as those provided by the software developer. Together, these four notational resources provide the reader with numerous options designed to enhance studying by enabling the text to be modified and personalized.
