The Loneliness of the Long-distance Runner
by Alan Sillitol

As soon as I got to Borstal they made me a long-distance runner. They must have thought I was just built for it. I was long and skinny for my age then, and I still am. In any case, I didn’t mind. In my family we have always thought running was a good thing, especially running away from the police.

I’ve always been a good runner. I run fast and I have a long stride. The only trouble is that no matter how fast I ran, it didn’t stop me getting caught by the cops after a job I did at a baker’s.

You might think it a bit odd, having long-distance runners in Borstal. You might think that as soon as he got into the country a long-distance runner would try to run away. But you are wrong, and I’ll tell you why.

The first thing is that the men in charge of us are not as daft as they look. Another thing is, I’m not as daft as I would look if I tried to make a break for it while I was on a run. To run away and then get caught is a mug’s game, and I’m not falling for it.

What counts in this life is being cunning. Even then, you’ve got to use your cunning in the best way you can. I’m telling you straight: they are cunning, and I am cunning.

On a raw and frosty morning I get up at five o’clock and stand and shiver on the stone floor. All the others still have an hour to sleep before the bells go. I go downstairs through all the passages to the big outside door.

When this happens I feel like the first and the last man in the world both at once. I feel like the first man because I’ve got hardly a stitch on, and I’m going out into the frozen fields in my vest and shorts. Even the first poor bloke in the world knew how to make a suit of leaves, or how to skin an animal for an overcoat. I’m in training for the big sports day. That is when all the pig-faced ladies and gentlemen come and make speeches to us. It’s as if we were racehorses. Only we don’t get so well looked after as racehorses, that’s the only thing.

So there I am, standing in the doorway looking out at the frosty ground.

Glossary:

hardly a stitchon – майже голий;

cunning – хитрий;

daft – божевільний;
