Exercise 4
To learn long list of words, it is sometimes helpful to divide them up into groups. Try dividing these vegetable names into groups, in any way you like, e. g. “vegetable which grow underground” (potatoes, carrots etc.). If possible, compare your answers with someone else’s. Exercise 10 1. Look at the menu. Check the meaning of new words in your dictionary.
2. Put the words in the correct order to make sentences or questions. Then use them to complete the conversation between the waiter and two customers, Linda and George.

Exercise 13 Shorten these sentences 1. It is not untrue for me to say that Annie is in the habit of consuming far more food than can reasonably be considered good for her health. (Rewrite the sentence in five words or less.) 2. Pasta, in all of its many forms, is well known to be high on the list of those foods which are most frequently consumed by the inhabitants of the Indian peninsula. (seven words or less) Exercise 14 Write one sentence or question for each situation 1. You are offered a cup of coffee, but you don’t like coffee. How do you ask for tea instead? 2. You have seen an old coffee-pot that you like in a market stall. The market trader has asked for 20 pounds for it. You want to pay less. What do you say? 3. You owe a friend some money and are ready to pay it back. You want to know whether your friend prefers cash or a cheque (use the word rather) Exercise 15 Here are some useful practical tips for everyday live. Unfortunately, the beginnings and ends have got mixed up. Restore them.
To make tomatoes easier to peel, rub them with lemon first and then wash them.
If you want to pick up a rabbit, you should rub it with liquid brass cleaner.
To get cigarette stains off your fingers, cover them with very hot water for a minute or two.
If you catch German measles, put cold water in one and stand the other in hot water. You can clean dirty saucepans by packing them with wet newspaper and leaving them overnight. To get dust of a guitar, don’t hold its ears. If two glasses are stuck together, don’t visit anyone who is pregnant unless you’re sure she’s already had them To get small scratches off your you should put rice inside it, shake it and empty it. Watch glass, You can make tight shoes more by filling them with cold water and vinegar and comfortable letting them boil for five minutes.
Exercise16 WRITING A FOOD ARTICLE. I Read the text and write a food article of your own Eggplant is one of my favourite vegetables. It is best and cheapest in August and September. A good place to buy eggplant is the Fairway Market on Main Street, where you can get excellent fruit and vegetables at low prices. You can look eggplant with tomatoes, zucchini, and garlic to make a delicious vegetable stew. You can also cook it and then serve it cold with a yoghurt, olive oil, and garlic dressing, for a wonderful cool dish for summertime. These are just two of the many ways you can enjoy eggplant. The Tuz Restaurant in downtown Midvale, which serves Turkish cuisine, has excellent eggplant dishes. II Write an article about another kind of food in the same way.
