Construction (конструкція) There is/There are
Ø Конструкція There is/There are вживається тоді, коли є необхідність вказати на місцезнаходження об’єкту. При цьому сам об’єкт цікавить менш, ніж його місцезнаходження. Порівняйте:
| The book is on the table. Книга на столі. The pictures are on the wall. Картини на стіні. | There is a book on the table. На столі знаходиться (є) книга. There are pictures on the wall. На стіні знаходяться (є) картини. |
Ø Існує такий порядок слів у реченні:
1) зворот There is/There are;
2) підмет (іменник);
3) обставина місця або часу (де? коли?).
| 1) There is There are На столі | 2) a pencil three pencils знаходиться (є) | 3) on the table. on the table. олівець. |
Ø Такі реченння перекладаються з кінця (з обставини), а дієслово to be у звороті має значення “знаходитьcя”, “є”, “існує”. Іноді за контекстом у перекладі доцільно використовувати інші дієслова для більш чіткої передачі змісту:
| There is a book on the table. | На столі лежить (є) книга. |
| There are pictures on the wall. | На стіні висять(є) картини. |
| There is a chair in the corner. | У кутку стоїть (є) стілець. |
Ø Дієслово to be у цьому зворотізавжди узгоджується з першим іменником:
| There is a pencil on the table. | На столі стоїть олівець. |
| There are two pencils on the table. | На столі стоять два олівці. |
| There is a pen and two pencils on the table. | На столі стоїть ручка та два олівці. |
| There are two pencils and a penon the table. | На столі стоять два олівці та ручка. |
Ø Зі злічуваними іменниками в однині завжди вживається неозначений артикль a/an, а в множині можливі такі неозначені займенники:

Ø З незлічуваними іменниками вживається нульовий артикль та неозначені займенники:
