Transcribe the words containing /i:, I, e, {/ in the sentences you hear: a) He ran off with it before anyone could catch him. b) He did not know that the dog he saw in the water was a reflection of himself. c) He has lost his own bone, too, because it fell as he jumped in. d) If you want more because you are greedy, in the end you might find you have less. F. Transcribe the words containing the phonemes you have learnt. Read them: (/D@/, //{nd/, /hIz/, /DeI /, /@/, /hJ/, /It/, /hIm/, /keIm/, /{z/, /dId/, /D{t/, /In/, /h{z/, /bIg/, /Iz/, /maIn/, /sed/, /aI/, /teIk/, /sJ/, /DJ/, /aID@/, /h{d/, /end /, /maIt/). Answer the following questions: 1) Which vowel is the most frequent in the words you have written? (/I/ - 7, /{/ - 5, /@/ - 3, /J/ - 3, /eI/ - 3, /aI/ - 3, /e/ - 2). 2) How many monosyllabic, disyllabic and three-syllable words are there in the text of the fable? Group the monosyllabic words according to the following syllable patterns: V, VC, VCC, CVC, CV, CCVC, CVCC, CVCCC? Note: the letter V stands for a vowel; C stands for a consonant. Monosyllabic words – 135, disyllabic words – 20, three-syllable words – 4. V – 9, VC – 18, VCC – 6, CVC – 52, CV – 41, CCVC – 3, CVCC – 5, CVCCC – 2. G. Define the stress patterns of disyllabic and three-syllable words in the fable. Note: the symbol| –stands for a stressed syllable; the symbolÈ stands for an unstressed syllable (disyllabic words: | – È, È | –; three-syllable words: È | – È, | – È È). Intonation Practice A. Listen to each sentence of the fable, write down the most prominent word(s) in it, mark the nuclear tone it (they) takes (take). B. Listen to the sentences, write them down, mark stressed words in them: a) One day, a dog took a bone from a shop. b) He came to a river and went over the bridge. c) That dog has a big bone. d) So in he jumped. C. Listen to the sentences, write the words on which the pitch changes its direction: a) As he looked down into the water, he saw another dog with a bone! b) I will jump into the water and take it from him. c) When he was in the water, he could not see the other dog. d) So, because he was greedy, he got nothing in the end. D. Classify the intonation groups you hear according to the nuclear tones. Mark the falling tone with F, the rising tone with R: For example: A dog took a bone from the shop — F. a) He came to a river …; b) He saw another dog with a bone; c) When he was in the water…; d) If you want more because you are greedy…; e) …and went over the bridge; f) As he looked down into the water…; g) One day…; h) …he could not see the other dog; i) “I will jump into the water.”
