Australia is the world's largest island and the smallest continent. It is situated in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies became a federation and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed.
A distinctive Australia flora and fauna is reflected in the country’s coat-of-arms by the symbols of Australia’s endemic animals; kangaroo and emu and a twig of wattle (a kind of acacia).
Australia has no official language, but most Australians speak English. In fact, this is their national language by consensus instead of by law. Despite the deep English language heritage, they do have terminology and lingo of their own. A barbecue girl in Australia is a " Barbie." They call clothes, " clobbers." If something is terrific, it's " ripper." " Fairy floss" in Australia means cotton candy. French Fries are " chips" and potato chips are " crisps." Males are " blokes" and females are " sheilas." Australians called New Zealanders, " Kiwis."
The population of Australia is more sheep than people; in fact, there are roughly ten sheep in Australia for every person. As a result, Australia is the largest exporter in the world of lamb meat and wool. Australia's most famous animals are unique to Australia only. When many people think of wildlife in Australia, they think of such animals as koala bears and kangaroos. Because Australia is an island and not connected to any other land, it has developed its own wildlife. The kangaroo, koala bear, emu, and kookaburra are animals that are only found in the wild in Australia.
