Idiomatic Expressions
English as well as Russian has got a great variety of idiomatic expressions. Idiomatic phrases and expressions sometimes create difficultness as a dictionary becomes inefficient to understand the meaning. A large number of idiomatic expressions came into English, as well as Russian, from history and traditions. For example, the idiomatic expression ‘to have school ties’ means ‘to know some influential people who can give support’. Therefore, a good student should realize the importance of idiomatic expressions and study them respectively.
Memorize the following idiomatic expressions and use them in your sentences.
Exercise № 30. Translate sentences into English.
1. Большинство русских поселенцев на Аляске жили в роскоши. 2. Несомненно, было глупо сражаться за право свободы вероисповедания без пропаганды религии. 3. Витус Беринг и Алексей Чириков не имели времени, чтобы жить в богатстве. Всю свою жизнь они посвятили укреплению мощи и славы России. 4. Емельян Пугачев был простым донским казаком, который объявил себя императором России. 5. Покупка Аляски была очень простой и логичной.
Exercise № 31. Word game.
Make as many words as you can from the word “unfortunately”. You can use each letter only once in a new word. New words should contain four letters or more. Then do it again with the word “simultaneously”.
Role game: Writing practice in present tenses.
1) Imagine that you are a captain of a ship that is forwarding to the Russian colonies in America. Make a list of goods and products to supply colonists.
