Study help Getting ready to read
Reading for information has a particular organizational pattern. It has a topic –the name, theme, or general subject, e.g., a title or heading. The topic helps to find out the main idea of the passage which can be found in the beginning, middle, or end of the passage. There are also supporting details. These are the sentences in a passage that explain the different points of the main idea. There are two types of supporting details: major and minor. Major details directly develop the main idea; minor details develop major details. Supporting details provide the reader with additional information, e.g. data, statistics, steps in a process and examples Supporting details are usually introduced by signal words, e.g., also, however, moreover (major details), for example, that is (minor details), etc.
