Warm Up: Canada has both English and French as its national languages. What are the problems with having two languages as national? Think about Kazakhstan, what problems occur because both Kazakh and Russian are used?

Task 1 Read the Russian text and to rearrange the English sentences below

in order to get the analogous English text about Canada.

Канада находится на севере континента Северная Америка, между США и Аляской. С запада Канада омывается Тихим океаном, а с востока - Атлантическим.

Канаде также принадлежат северные острова. Территория около 10-ти миллионов кв. километров.

На западе Канады, параллельно Тихому океану, тянутся горы Рокки.

К востоку от них тянутся равнины.

На территории Канады протекают много рек: река св. Лаврентия, Макензи, Юкон, Ниагара. Ниагарский водопад- самый большой в мире.

В центральной части Канады лежат Великие Озера- Онтарио, Эри, Большое Медвежье озеро, Большое озеро рабов, Мичиган и др.

На территории Канады несколько климатических регионов.

Зима в Канаде длится 4-5 месяцев. На севере страны находятся районы тундры и тайги.

В Канаде проживает 31 миллионов человек.

Столица Канады - Оттава. Крупные города: Монреаль, Торонто, Ванкувер, Гамильтон, Эдмонтон, Виннипег и Квебек.

В Канаде два государственных языка – английский и французский.

 

Canada

There are two state languages English and French in Canada.

There are regions of tundra and taiga in the north.

Canada is situated in the north of the North-American continent, between the USA and Alaska.

In Canada there are many rivers: the river of St. Laurentius, the Mackenzie, the Yukon, the Niagara.

Winter in Canada lasts for 4-5 months.

Canada is washed by the Atlantic Ocean in the East and by the Pacific Ocean in the West.

The territory of the country is about ten million square kilometers.

The islands in the north also belong to Canada.

The Niagara waterfall is the biggest in the world.

The Great Lakes- Ontario, Erie, Great Bear Lake, Great Slave Lake, Michigan and others are in the central part of Canada.

Canada has several climate zones.

There are plains to the east from them.

The population of Canada is about 31 million people.

Ottawa is the capital of Canada.

The big cities of Canada are Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Hamilton, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Quebec.

There are the Rocky Mountains along the Pacific Ocean coast in the West.

Task 2 Nnumber the following things to see and do in Canada in the order

of importance for you and to be ready to explain why you ordered

them the way you did.

- See polar bears and Eskimos in the northern tundra part of the country.

- Visit the Niagara Falls and imagine floating down it in a barrel.

- Go snow- skiing in the Rocky Mountains

- Speak French and eat French food in Quebec, Western Canada.

- Visit places in North America where the Vikings first sailed to around 1000 A.D.

- Speak Russian to the immigrants in British Colombia, Eastern Canada.

- Visit Toronto, one of the most diverse cities in the world, and eat at all different types of ethnic restaurants.

Task 3 Use the following facts about Canada to fill in the text below.

The Canadian government is made of three branches: the executive, legislative and judicial branch. The executive branch is headed by a Monarchy (Queen Elizabeth II) and an elected Prime Minister (Stephen Harper). The legislative branch is made up of two parts: the Senate and the House of Commons. The judicial branch is headed by the Supreme Court.

Political parties: main political parties are the Conservative Party, Liberal Party, New Democratic Party and the Bloc Quebecois Party. Canadian politics has always been strongly influenced by the strong French influence in the East and a strong English influence in the West. In Parliament, speeches are often given in both French and English.
