ETYMOLOGY • " Wales " - Walha, meaning " foreigner” • Welsh term - Cymry, which most likely meant " compatriots " in Old Welsh. CULTURAL PECULIARITIES or features of WELSHNESS • the Welsh language • ancient Welsh festivals and traditions, • monastic asceticism, • a highly evolved secular legal system, • a distinctive literary tradition and culture.
GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION Wales is the largest principality. This means that it is ruled by a prince. Traditionally the Prince of Wales is the eldest son of the English monarch. Llywelyn the Great founded the Principality of Wales in 1216. In 1282 Wales became a part of England when Edward I defeated Llywelyn.
