A letter of application generally has four parts.

4. POLITE EXPRESSIONS

 


 


PUNCTUATION: Greetings

Colon

Use a colon (:) after the greeting in a formal, business letter.

Dear Mrs. Bok: Dear Sirs: Dear Madam:



Comma

Use a comma (,) after the greeting in an informal, personal letter.

Dear Mother, Dear Richard,


Period

These titles end in periods.

Mr. Smith Any man
Ms. Schwinn Any woman
Dr. Ross A man or woman who is a medical doctor (M.D.) or who has an academic degree (Ph.D.)

Use formal English in business letters.

Offer
