The Structure of Retelling and Supporting Phrases for a Text Discussion

I. Introduction (The opening sentences/the beginning of your retelling)

1) The title of the text: I would like to retell you a text (a story) that is entitled ‘Simon Parker’s Future Profession’. / Let me retell the text…/ The text that I’m going to retell is entitled…... / The text has the next title …..

2) The author of the text (if it is known): The author of the text is…./ Its author is…..

It belongs to ……. /. The text is written by ….. Unfortunately I don’t know the name of the author (if the name of the author is not given).

3) The date and place of the text’s publishing (if it is given): The text was published in …./ taken from/ dated by….

4) The time and place of the story’s action: The action takes place in…..

5) The main character of the text: The main character/characters is/are…….

6) The main idea of the text. The main idea of the text is ….. / It is devoted to…../ It concerns with ….

7) The message of the author. The author wants to say…./ The author’s message is …..

 

II. Body (The text of your retelling)

1) How to start retelling: In the beginning of the text….. / The text starts from / begins with the fact that / begins saying that….. / The author starts saying that…..

2) How to develop retelling: Then it goes on saying that.... / The author continues the text saying that…../ According to the author/ according to the text…. / The author touches upon (tells, says, explains, points out, states, stresses out, emphasizes, remarks, underlines, gives a description, describes, mentions, shows, tries to show, means, suggests, implies that)…..

3) How to keep on retelling: Further on the story runs that…./ It turns out that…./It happens that….

4) How to finish your retelling: To make a long story short, the text ends up with the fact that / The story has a happy/sad end. / The author finishes his story saying that….. / In the result, …...
