Division






 

For division we use the same algorithm for computing error term as in multiplication, but the process for computing the units is different. Based on your insight from the reading in the precision document, please divide the following numbers:

1. 3.46 cm ± 0.01 cm / 1.26 cm ± 0.01cm

 

aerrorTerm=0.01 cm / 3.46 cm= 0.003 cm

berrorTerm= 0.01 cm / 1.26 cm= 0.008 cm

rerrorTerm=(0.003 + 0.008) / (3.46 x 1.26) = 0.011 / 4.36 = 0.003 cm

 

2. 16.32 cm3 ± 0.01 cm3 / 8.5 cm ± 0.1cm

 

aerrorTerm=0.01 cm / 3.46 cm= 0.003 cm

berrorTerm= 0.01 cm / 1.26 cm= 0.008 cm

rerrorTerm=(0.003 + 0.008) / (3.46 x 1.26) = 0.011 / 4.36 = 0.003 cm

 

3. 5.05 km ± 0.04 km / 19.11 cm ± 0.01 cm. Is possible to do this division? If so, what should the error term be for this and why? If not, why not?

 

 

aerrorTerm=0.04 km / 5.05 km = 0.008

berrorTerm= 0.01 cm / 19.11 cm= 0.001

rerrorTerm=(8* + 0.001) / (5.05 * x 19.11) = 0.009 / 96.50 = 0.0001

 

 

4. 1.55 m ± 0.01 m / 1.34 cm ± 0.02 cm? Is possible to do this division? If yes, explain what you did and why. If not, explain why not.

 

aerrorTerm=0.01 m / 1.55 m = 0.006 m

berrorTerm= 0.02 cm / 1.34 cm= 0.015 cm

rerrorTerm=(0.006 + 0.015) / (1.55 x 1.34) = 0.021 / 2.077 = 0.01

 

 

5. 25.23 m ± 0.01 m / 3.25 sec ± 0.02 sec? Is possible to do this division? If yes, explain what you did and why. If not, explain why not.

 

aerrorTerm=0.01 m / 25.23 m = 0.0004 m

berrorTerm= 0.02 sec / 3.25 sec = ±0.006 sec

rerrorTerm=(0.0004 + 0.006) / (25.23 x 3.25) = 0.006 / 81.9 = 0.0001
