What do you know about other seasons in the British Isles?

The Climate of Great Britain

The considerable [kə n'sɪ də rə b(ə)l] значний contrasts of the climate within the comparatively small area of Britain are partly due to the elongated ['iː lɒ ŋ geɪ tɪ d] витягнутий shape of the country and Britain’s position between a great land mass and a vast [va: st] величезний ocean. The climate of the western part of Britain is maritime ['mæ rɪ ˌ taɪ m] приморський in character (humid ['hju: mid] вологий and cloudy), while eastern and southeastern England have certain of Europe’s climatic attributes, including biting ['baɪ tɪ ŋ ] пронизуючий cold wind and snow showers in winter. Relief is the third factor in creating broad contrasts of climate.

The climate is generally mild and temperate [ˈ temp(ə)rə t] помірний. The weather is object to frequent changes. In general, there are few extremes [ɪ k'striː m] екстремальне значення of temperature, with the temperature rarely above 32 °C or low -10 °C. It is not very cold in winter and never very hot in summer. The British ports are ice-free and its rivers are not frozen throughout the year. Spring is the most favourite season. In autumn and winter fog is most frequent. Sometimes fogs are so thick that it's impossible to see anything within a few meters. In summer there are thunderstorms over small areas; they are most frequent in the warmest parts of the country.

Annual ['æ njʊ ə l] річний rainfall decreases from west to east and increases with height [haɪ t]. The highest parts of Britain, where rain falls two days out of three, receive more than 100 inches. Rain is a familiar feature of the British climate. It rains very often in all seasons in Great Britain. Autumn and winter are the wettest. On the average ['æ v(ə)rɪ dʒ ] в середньому, Britain has more than 200 rainy days a year. Sometimes it rains so heavily, that the Englishmen say «It's raining cats and dogs».

The weather on the British Isles has a bad reputation. It is very changeable. Talking about the weather is a part of polite conversations which may be extremely short. There are a lot of jokes and stories about the British climate in common use. British people say, “Other countries have climate, in England we have weather.”

So, we may say that the British climate has three main features: it is mild, humid and very changeable.
