Stomach lavage at children

Task for student: Provide stomach lavage, comment the methodic of manipulation.
Information for examiner: Estimate the manipulation of student in scores.
Necessary equipment: Mannequin, apron from medical oilcloth, basin, medical gloves, stomach probe according to the age of child with funnel, marker, necessary volume of distilled water, sterile test tubes for collection of gastric content and washing water, water for rinsing of mouth, absorbent carbon, towel, napkins, container with disinfecting solution.

| 1. | Patient should not have contraindications for a procedure. Explain the aim of manipulation for a child and his/her parents. Take permission for providing the manipulation. | |||
| 2. | Correct position for patient: - if patient is unconscious – lie on the left side; - if patient is conscious – sit, incline the head and body little bit forward; Put on the apron from medical oilcloth, and the end of oilcloth put down to basin. Put on medical gloves. | 2, 5 | ||
| 3. | Measure the distance till the stomach with probe – from ear lobe to nose bridge, then till the xiphoidal processus. Note with marker. | |||
| 4. | If patient at sitting position, stand behind the patient and little right side. Take probe with the right hand. Previously put the end of probe into water, introduce it in the nose or through the mouth till the note. | 2, 5 | ||
| 5. | To incline the head of patient to opposite side at the introducing probe through the nose. Introduce the probe in nostril carefully. Push the probe to nasopharynx by the posterior wall. | 7, 5 | ||

| 7. | Put down the funnel lower than the level of stomach. At the appearing of gastric contents collect them into test tubes for analysis. Next excretion drain to basin. | |||
| 8. | Pour the water into the funnel which is on the level of stomach and lift up it. The water should not disappear from the narrow part of funnel. Then put down the funnel lower than initial level gradually and quickly. In that case water and gastric contents should drain to basin. | |||
| 9. | Many times repeat point №8 till the washing water as long as be completely pure. Quantity of introduced and excreted liquid must be equal. General quantity of liquid for child aged 6-9 month must be 600-900ml, 9-12 month 900-1000ml, elder 1 year - 1 liter per year, not more than 10 liter. | |||
| 10. | Introduce aged dose of absorbent carbon into the probe (previously dissolve it in boiled water, 1 tablet per 10kg of weight) and remove the probe carefully. Used instruments put into the container with disinfecting solution. | |||
