Время Past Continuous употребляется:

1. Для выражения действия, происходившего в определенный момент в прошлом.

Этот момент может быть выражен такими обозначениями времени, как at five o’clock yesterday (вчера в пять часов), at that moment (в тот момент), at noon (в полдень) и т.д.

He was redecorating his room at that moment yesterday.

Также этот момент может выражаться другим прошедшим действием (оно, как правило, выражается глаголом в Past Simрle).

I was looking through the newspapers when you phoned me.

2. Для выражения длительного действия, которое происходило в определенном прошлом отрезке времени. Данный отрезок времени может выражаться такими обозначениями, как all day yesterday (весь день вчера), the whole summer (все лето), from three till five yesterday (с трех до пяти вчера) и т.д.

The whole May our company was carrying on negotiations for the purchase of DLX model.

Часто два длительных действия происходят одновременно:

While mum was making salad, I was washing up. - Пока мама готовила салат, я мыла посуду.
