Lesson 13 FIXING THE LEG

Упражнение 1. Прочтите вслух следующие слова: blizzard, reality, usually, climb, receiver, try, reply, of course, convenient, wait, die, gasp, wrap, pupil, widely, dilate, gum, dry, break (broke, broken), alive

Упражнение 2. Запомните следующие наречия, переведите их:

slowly, commonly, promptly, highly, locally, environmentally

Упражнение 3. Повторите следующие глаголы и выучите их:

to fix - вправлять (кость)

to sleep (slept, slept) - спать

to reply - отвечать

to die - умирать

to break (broke, broken) - ломать

to save - спасать

Упражнение 4. Переведите следующие предложения:

1) To fix the bone means to put it into the proper position.

2) A pupil is a part of the eye. It is black. We can see it in the centre of the eye.

3) When the temperature is high the pupils usually become big. When pupils are big we say: " The pupils are dilated".

4) The English adverb " widely" means «широко» in Russian. For example: Vaccination of animals is widely used in our country.

YOU CAN FIX THE LEG, CAN'T YOU?

It must have been about one o'clock that morning and the blizzard that was forecast had become a reality.

I was sleepingwhen the phone rang.Usually telephones do notwake me when I know that I must climb outof bed and go out in the cold. After the phone rang several times, I tookthe receiver and said: " Hello, this is Doctor Swails". I was trying to make the words come out right.

The man on the line was speaking frantically: " Doctor? " he said, " doctor, my dog hasjust been hitby a car. Canyou see my dog right away? "

" Of course", I replied, in the best doctor's voice that I could muster. " It will takeme about twenty minutes".

I stepped into the blizzard at one o'clock in the morning and I was thinking that there hadto be more convenient ways to make a living.

An elderly man was waiting for me at the door of the clinic. The man cradleda poodle in his arms. " Hurry, Doctor, I think she's dying", he said. " Look, see how she's gasping? "

The man placedher on my examination table and removed the blankets that he had wrapped around her. The dog's pupils were widely dilated. Her gums were dry and gray-white.

I examined the dog and saw that its leg was broken, the dog-was in shock and about to die.

" You can fix the leg, can't you? " the man said. " How long will she have to stay here? "

I promised him that I should try, although I believed it was hopeless. In fact I was amazed that the dog was still alive.

I tried every means to save the dog. I wanted to make the old man happy, but everything was in vain. The dog died at 3.30 a.m.
