Prabhupä da: Not taken. It is still there. Why do you interpret that this is body? Is it not rascaldom? No devotee, no ä cä rya has done this, but these modern so-called scholars and leaders, they have done it. Are they not rascals? What do you think? Eh?

Guest (3): No, rascals... My representative (?) orders that " The people listen to me..."

Prabhupä da: So, why they should say? Now, you are a lawyer.

Guest (3): We do not know (indistinct)

Prabhupä da: And why do they...? What is the difficulty? Dharma-kñ etra kuru-kñ etra, is that a very difficult Sanskrit? Now, there is no question. Even in... If you do not understand Sanskrit, what is the difficulty to understand dharma-kñ etra? Is it not a Hindi word? Kurukñ etra is a name of place. So what is the difficulty? Why do you interpret that Kurukñ etra means this body? This rascaldom has killed the whole spiritual atmosphere of India. They are responsible, these rascal politicians, the rascal scholars, so-called. Actually if we want good of the people, these rascals should be disclosed and people should come back. We should... Therefore we are presenting Bhagavad-gé tä as it is. Why we should interpret? You know, you, as a lawyer. When there is legal point, if it is not clear, one lawyer is trying to extract some meaning and the other lawyer is extract... It is... After all, the judges (indistinct) give the judgment. So this interpretation between the two lawyers are there when the subject matter is not very clear. Is it not?

Kå ñ ë a is personal Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself. He came to show His mercy, and therefore He left Bhagavad-gé tä to be read by common... Any common man can understand. But the rascals are so rigid that they will misinterpret. Kå ñ ë a left it for reading it by everyone. Any common man can understand. Dharma-kñ etre kuru-kñ etre samavetä yuyutsavaù [Bg. 1.1]. This is the beginning. Any common man can understand. The Kurukñ etra is still there, and it is dharma-kñ etra. Still people go there to take bath in the Brahma-kunda during lunar and solar eclipse. It is a great dharma-kñ etra. But they will interpret, " Dharma-kñ etra kuru-kñ etra means this body." Where they get this meaning? Where is the dictionary? No, because he is scholar, he has invented some meaning. This is going on, and people are misled.

So especially in India, the atmosphere is very good. It is especially meant, within this universe, this plot of land known as Bhä ratavarñ a, India, is the most sacred place within this universe. And of the whole land Bhä ratavarñ a, in Bengal, it is very sacred. And the whole of Bengal, this Nadia is very sacred. And in the whole Nadia, this part is very sacred, Mä yä pura Candradoya Temple. So by Kå ñ ë a's grace, you have got this opportunity to live here. Take advantage, full advantage of this opportunity, spiritually fortunate. This is the statement of Bhaktivinoda Ö hä kura. Not that I am manufacturing. We cannot manufacture anything, but we can repeat the words of our predecessors. Bhaktivinoda Ö hä kura, in his Jaiva-Dharma, or in Caitanya-ç ikñ ä må ta, he has stated like that. In the Bhä ratavarñ a, Bengal is the most important place, and in Bengal, the district Nadia is most important place, because Caitanya Mahä prabhu appeared. Don't take it leniently. It is very serious thing that Bhä ratavarñ a is meant for cultivation of Kå ñ ë a consciousness. Unfortunately, the present leaders, they are misleading them. Anyway, you are fortunate. You take advantage of this cult of Kå ñ ë a consciousness which was spoken by Kå ñ ë a Himself, in this land of Bhä ratavarñ a, dharma-kñ etre kuru-kñ etre samavetä yuyutsavaù [Bg. 1.1].

That kurukñ etre is still existing. It is not a myth or mythology. The nonsense people, they may say like that, but Kå ñ ë a is the supermost person both in history... Purä ë a means history, itihä sa purä ë a. Saraà saraà samuddhå tam. Vyä sadeva compiled the Ç ré mad-Bhä gavatam by collecting the most important news from history. Purä ë a means old history. It is not mythology. The foolish people, they say like that, " Mythology means something created." No. Don't take it that way. It is the essence of important historical incidences, record. Mahä bhä rata is also history. Mahä means great, and bhä rata means this land. Actually it is a history. But foolish people, without understanding through the guru-paramparä system, they manufacture their own way of understanding; therefore they are misled. They cannot take full advantage of this Vedic literature because they are misled. We should not be misled. We should know always that we are lame, paì goù. Just like a lame man cannot go very fast. But by the grace of Kå ñ ë a, even a lame man can go fast—not only go fast, but cross over the mountain.

If we are doubtful: " Oh, Bhagavad-gé tä is spoken by some Kå ñ ë a, somebody. He was learned man, philosopher. So I can point out my own point..." No. Not like that.

So,

upaniñ at-sahita sü tra kahe yei tattva

mukhya-vå ttye sei artha parama mahattva

This is... Caitanya Mahä prabhu says that all the Upaniñ ads, all the Vedic literature, Vedä nta-sü tra, they, they are composed in that way. Therefore mukhya-vå ttye sei artha parama mahattva: " Therefore, if you take directly the meaning, that is the superexcellence of your understanding." Directly. Don't try to foolishly interpret. Just like in the Bhagavad-gé tä the first verse is,

dharma-kñ etre kuru-kñ etre

samavetä yuyutsavaù

mä makä ù pä ë ò avä ç caiva

kim akurvata saï jaya

[Bg. 1.1]

" My dear Saï jaya, my sons, mä makä ù, my sons and Pä ë ò ava, the sons of my younger brother, Pä ë ò u, they assembled in the battlefield which is also a pilgrimage. Then what did they do? " This is the simple... But the nonsense rascals, they are eschewing some meaning, " Oh, kuru-kñ etra means 'body, ' and dharma-kñ etra means this and this... Pä ë ò ava means 'the five senses. ' " So many nonsensical... Even Gandhi has done this. What Gandhi? Gandhi's nothing. You see? So they are, these rascals are doing and misleading persons. I've recently written one written to Dr. Radhakrishnan that " You are going to retire. Now join this Kå ñ ë a conscious movement. You have written your Bhagavad-gé tä, and you don't believe Kå ñ ë a as Supreme Lord, God. Therefore by reading your Bhagavad-gé tä people have become godless. So you better rectify your mistake. Now join this." I've written state letter to Dr. Radhakrishnan. " So if you want to, I mean to say, compensate the greatest sin you have committed in your Bhagavad-gé tä, then you join this Kå ñ ë a conscious movement and rectify yourself." " Not to Kå ñ ë a."

So Caitanya Mahä prabhu does not approve this. Kå ñ ë a says,

man-manä bhava mad-bhakto

mad-yä jé mä à namaskuru

mam evaiñ yasi

kaunteya asaà ç ayaù

[Bg. 18.65]

" O My dear Arjuna, you just surrender unto Me. You worship Me. You offer your obeisances unto Me. You always think of Me." This is straight. The straight meaning, " Me, " Kå ñ ë a is saying. Therefore we should offer our respect to Kå ñ ë a. We should worship Kå ñ ë a. We should think of Kå ñ ë a. We shall chant of Kå ñ ë a. This is the straight meaning. But the commentator says, " Oh, not to Kå ñ ë a." Just see. " Not to Kå ñ ë a." So this nonsensical commentation is... Caitanya Mahä prabhu says, mukhya-vå ttye. Mukhya-vå ttye, directly, as you understand it. If I say, " My dear such and such, give me a glass of water, " now you interpret, " Oh, Swamijé wants water. Oh, he has taken water. Let me supply this or that, interpretation, " what is the use of interpreting? I'm asking for water. Give me water. Call a spade a spade. This should be the... This should be the understanding of Vedä nta. Because all foolish nonsense, they are interpreting... " Such and such person's commentation of Vedä nta-sü tra." Because they were trying to manifest and expose their thinking power, that " I think that this should be like this." What nonsense you are? What you can think? You think as it is. This is... Caitanya Mahä prabhu says. Don't think otherwise. As it is. In the Upaniñ ads, é ç ä vä syam idaà sarvam: " Everything belongs to God." Believe it as belongs to God. Don't interpret. Then you'll understand Vedas. É ç ä vä syam idaà sarvaà yat kiï cit jagatyä à jagat: [É ç o mantra 1] " Anything, any minute thing in this material world, everything belongs to that Supreme Lord." Who can deny it? Why do you interpret? Tena tyaktena bhuï jé thä: " So you enjoy as He orders you." …

 

So Caitanya Mahä prabhu says mukhya-vå ttye, direct meaning, as it is said. That is beauty of understanding. Janmä dy asya yataù: [SB 1.1.1] " The supreme source from which everything emanating, that is Brahman." What is the interpretation? There is no interpretation. Supreme... There must be some supreme source. That is quite philosophical and logical, that I have my... This bodily existence has a source, my father. My father has a source, his father. His father... Go on. There must be one supreme source. That is God. Simple to understand. Is it very difficult to understand? The supreme cause, He is God. Therefore Kå ñ ë a is described in Brahma-saà hitä, sarva-kä raë a-kä raë am [Bs. 5.1]. Kä raë a means " cause, " and sarva means " all." There are cause, cause, cause and effect, cause and effect, cause and eff... When you reach to the supreme cause, He's Kå ñ ë a. He is Kå ñ ë a. And Kå ñ ë a confirms it in the Bhagavad-gé tä, ahaà sarvasya prabhavaù. Have you got Bhagavad-gé tä?

ahaà sarvasya prabhavo

mattaù sarvaà pravartate

iti matvä bhajante mä m..

[Bg. 10.8].

In the Tenth Chapter you'll find this word, ahaà sarvasya prabhavaù. So things should be accepted as they are. (aside:) Have you got it?

yei grantha-kartä cä he sva-mata sthä pite

ç ä strera sahaja artha nahe tä ì hä haite

This is the secret of modern fashionable interpretation. If you want to establish... Suppose you have got some conviction, and if you want to establish it by evidence of an approved literature... An approved literature. Just like Gandhi. Gandhi wanted to establish nonviolence from Bhagavad-gé tä. He was a... He is known to be a great student of Bhagavad-gé tä, but he was not at all. His political theory was that he wanted to conquer over the enemies by nonviolence method. Nonviolent noncooperation, that was his, I mean to say, theory. He wanted to get away all kinds of nonviolence from the world, all kinds of violence from the world. So he wanted to prove from Bhagavad-gé tä nonviolence. But how you can prove nonviolence from Bhagavad-gé tä? Because Bhagavad-gé tä is being spoken in the violent battlefield. But because he wanted to prove nonviolence, therefore he says, " Oh, these Pä ë ò avas means this. This Kå ñ ë a means this. This chariot means this. These Kurus means this. Dharmakñ etra means this. Kurukñ etra means this." He has invented and manufactured so many rascal meaning that it is very difficult... He said that dharmakñ etre... In the beginning of Bhagavad-gé tä there is the verse, dharmakñ etre kurukñ etre samavetä yuyutsavaù [Bg. 1.1]. Now the very word yuyutsavaù means persons who are desiring to fight with one another. Now, how you can prove nonviolence? But he extracts some meaning: " These Pä ë ò ava means five senses and the Kurukñ etra means this body." In this way, his interpretation.

Therefore, all different interpretation... The Vedic literature, either take Bhä gavata or Ç ré mad Bhagavad-gé tä, or any Upaniñ ad, the meaning is very clear. It is sheer foolishness to understand that " The meaning is vague, now I am clearing. I am a great scholar. I can interpret in a different way." So... As if Vyä sadeva left the meaning to be cleared by some rascal. You see? He was not himself competent to clear the meaning, but he left the work to be done by some rascal. That is their interpretation. But actually it is not. In every ç loka, if you know Sanskrit, you'll see the meaning is clear. Just like in the Bhagavad-gé tä, dharmakñ etre kurukñ etre samavetä yuyutsavaù [Bg. 1.1]. There was actual some fight between the two cousin groups, and they fought at the battlefield of Kurukñ etra. That Kurukñ etra is still existing. If you go to India that... There is a railway station, Kurukñ etra. It is about 150 miles from Delhi. And people go there for pilgrimage. Therefore it is dharmakñ etra, a place of religious rites. And in the Vedas, Sä ma-Veda, I think... I don't exactly remember. But one of the Vedas it is written that kurukñ etre dharma yajayet. In the Kurukñ etra, that place, if anyone wants to perform religious rites, he should go to Kurukñ etra and perform there. It will have better effect. This is the indication in the Vedic literatures. Therefore Kurukñ etra is still accepted. Those who travel, wander in pilgrimages, they go to Kurukñ etra still. The system is going on. If there is a lunar eclipse, they go to Kurukñ etra to make some charities. So Kurukñ etra is accepted from the very, very long period in the Vedic age as the place of pilgrimage. So it is stated there, dharmakñ etra. How can I interpret that this Kurukñ etra means this body? In which dictionary he finds this meaning? But people are so foolish, because Mahatma Gandhi has interpreted, " Oh, it is right." So this is going on.

So, yei grantha-kartä cä he sva-mata... If anyone wants to establish his own foolish theory, he takes advantage of popular book and tries to explain in his own way. So in other words it is clear that Ç aì karä cä rya, he wanted to establish this theory of monism, and therefore he has explained Vedä nta-sü tra in his own way, but that is not the actual explanation. What Lord Caitanya said, that is real explanation. All of them admitted. And this Prakä ç ä nanda Sarasvaté, he also admitted. Bhagavattä mä nile advaita nä yä ya sthä pana. Now, they wanted to establish the theory of monism, no difference between living entity and God, one; there is no separate God. Then, if admit, if it is admitted that God is the source of everything, then you have to accept duality. Because the source of everything and the everything emanated—duality.

tä te sü trä rtha vyä khyä kare anya ré te

'bhagavattä ' mä nile 'advaita' nä yä ya sthä pana

ataeva saba ç ä stra karaye khaë ò ana

Because the whole aim was to get away the existence of God, therefore all the Vedic literature was..., were interpreted by Ç aì karä cä rya in his own way. Still it is going on. That process is still going on. Although there are many, I mean to say, explanation of Vedä nta-sü tra by the Vaiñ ë ava sampradä yas. Just like Rä mä nujä cä rya, Madhvä cä rya... Every Vaiñ ë ava sampradä ya has his own explanation of Vedä nta-sü tra. Don't understand Vedantist means the monopoly by Ç aì kara sampradä ya. No. But people in general, they understand Vedantist means Ç aì kara sampradä ya. Because the devotee class, they do not give much importance to Vedä nta. Because they read Ç ré mad-Bhä gavatam, and Ç ré mad-Bhä gavatam is accepted by the Vaiñ ë ava sampradä ya, especially by the sect of Caitanya Mahä prabhu, as the real explanation of Vedä nta; therefore they do not give any other explanation of Vedä nta than Ç ré mad-Bhä gavatam. And because the Vaiñ ë ava sampradä ya does not give very much importance to Vedä nta-sü tra—because the explanation is there, they are reading actually Vedä nta-sü tra—people misunderstand that the Vedantist, followers of Vedä nta, is the Ç aì kara sampradä ya, not this Vaiñ ë ava sampradä ya. That is their misunderstanding.

Actually, any sampradä ya, either the Ç aì kara sampradä ya or Vedä nta-sampradä ya, if they have no standing on the Vedä nta-sü tra, they are not recognized. They are (not) recognized. In... The Indian system is, in the spiritual society, that if you have got any sampradä ya, particular, then you must present your explanation of Vedä nta-sü tra how do you understand Vedä nta-sü tra. On the basis of that understanding you will be recognized. So the Vaiñ ë ava sampradä ya, they are also Vedantists. And because Vaiñ ë ava sampradä ya, they are concerned with the bhakti, bhakti, I mean to say, cult, therefore our society, the Vaiñ ë avas, they were pleased to give me this title, Bhaktivedanta, that " You will explain the Vedä nta-sü tra." So this Bhaktivedanta title was especially offered to me, and I do not know why. That's all.

Tamä la Kå ñ ë a: Yes. You've expressed that in Madhya-lé lä.

Prabhupä da: That Mahä prabhu's feeling of Kå ñ ë a is like that. Therefore He took part in the Ratha-yä trä and invited Kå ñ ë a, " Come to Vå ndä vana." So these two important things took place in the Kurukñ etra. So we must have a very big temple there, and a varë ä ç rama college. This is my desire. Kå ñ ë a's direct instruction, Bhagavad-gé tä. It should be a historical... It is historical. People should come here as the most important historical place. And Gé tä is well known all over the world. And Gé tä begins with the word dharma-kñ etre kuru-kñ etre [Bg. 1.1]. So Kurukñ etra, in that sense very important.

Devotee: Minimizing the authority of the scripture or...

Prabhupä da: Yes. Scriptural injunction we should not minimize. We should not think contradictory. We should accept as it is. Then it will be good for us. Or interpretation. Scriptural interpretation is not required. Therefore, we are presenting Bhagavad-gé tä as it is, without any false interpretation. As it is. Kå ñ ë a-Kå ñ ë a. Kurukñ etra-Kurukñ etra. Pä ë ò ava-Pä ë ò ava. Dharma-kñ etre kuru-kñ etre samavetä [Bg. 1.1]. Kå ñ ë a uvä ca. Kå ñ ë a, Bhagavä n uvä ca: " The Supreme Personality of Godhead said." And we should not add here that... What is called? Paramä tmä uvä ca. No. Kå ñ ë a uvä ca. Paramä tmä is feature. In the Gé tä Press edition you will see " Paramä tmä." They never say Kå ñ ë a. They're so much afraid that " If I say 'Kå ñ ë a, ' He will at once capture me." You see? (chuckles) So in a different way. " Paraà Brahman, " " Caitanya, " like this, so many impersonal ways they will say. But that is not required. Bhagavä n uvä ca means Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kå ñ ë a. Sometimes they say, " Blessed Lord said." No. Why you say? The Supreme Personality of Godhead Kå ñ ë a said. Then, what is that next? No interpretation of the scripture. Next? What is the next item?

We are, whatever we are doing it is not whimsical or mental concoction. It is authorized and just to the standard of Bhagavad-gé tä. Our present movement is based on Bhagavad-gé tä —Bhagavad-gé tä as it is. We don't interpret. We do not interpret foolishly because... I say purposefully this word " foolishly, " that why should we interpret Kå ñ ë a's words? Am I more than Kå ñ ë a? Or did Kå ñ ë a leave some portion to be explained by me by interpretation? Then what is the importance of Kå ñ ë a? If I give my own interpretation, thinking myself more than Kå ñ ë a, this is blasphemy. How I can become more than Kå ñ ë a? If actually we want to take advantage of this Bhagavad-gé tä, then we must take Bhagavad-gé tä as it is. Just like Arjuna took. Arjuna, after hearing Bhagavad-gé tä, he said, sarvam etam å taà manye: " I accept all the words, my dear Keç ava, whatever You have said. I accept them in toto, without any change." This is understanding of Bhagavad-gé tä, not that I take advantage of the Bhagavad-gé tä and I interpret in my foolish way so that people will accept my philosophy. This is not Bhagavad-gé tä. There is no question of interpretation in the Bhagavad-gé tä. Interpretation is allowed when you cannot understand. When the things are clearly understood... If I say, " This is microphone, " everyone understands this is microphone. Where is the necessity of interpreting it? There is no necessity. This is foolishness, misleading. There cannot be any interpretation in the Bhagavad-gé tä. It is... Everything is clear to the point. Just like Bhagavä n Kå ñ ë a says... Kå ñ ë a does not say that " You all become sannyä sé and give up your occupational duty." No. Kå ñ ë a says, sva-karmaë ä tam abhyarcya saà siddhiù labhate naraù [Bg. 18.46]. You remain in your business. You remain your occupation. There is no need of changing. But still, you can become Kå ñ ë a conscious and make your life successful. This is the message of Bhagavad-gé tä. Bhagavad-gé tä is not going to make any topsy-turvy of the social order or spiritual order. No. It should be standardized according to the authority. And the best authority is Kå ñ ë a.

So this is a great culture, Bhagavad-gé tä as it is. So those responsible ladies and gentlemen are present here, make this center very successful and come here, study Bhagavad-gé tä as it is without any foolish interpretation. I say foolish again and again because interpretation is not at all required. Everything is clear, from the very beginning.

dharma-kñ etre kuru-kñ etre

samavetä yuyutsavaù

mä makä ù pä ë ò avä ç caiva

kim akurvata saï jaya

[Bg. 1.1]

So very clear. Kurukñ etra is dharma-kñ etra still. In the Vedas it is stated, kurukñ etre dharmam ä caret: " One should go to Kurukñ etra and perform religious rituals." Therefore it is dharma-kñ etra from time immemorial. And why should we interpret it that " This Kurukñ etra means this body, dharmakñ etra, this body"? Why? Why mislead people? Stop this misleading. And Kurukñ etra is still there. Kurukñ etra station, railway station, is there. So try to understand Bhagavad-gé tä as it is, make your life successful, and spread this message all over the world. You will be happy; the world will be happy. Of course, I am now very old man. I am eighty years old. My life is finished. But I want some responsible Indian and combined with other countries... Other countries, they are giving good cooperation. Otherwise, it was not possible for me to spread in so short time, only seven or eight years, to preach this cult all over the world. So I require the cooperation of the Indian, especially young men, educated men. Come forward. Stay with us. Study Bhagavad-gé tä. We haven't got anything to manufacture. Nothing to manufacture. And what we can manufacture? We are all imperfect. Whatever is there, let us study it and practically apply in life and spread the message all over the world. That is our mission.
