Контрольная работа

Чтобы правильно выполнить задания, необходимо усвоить следующие

разделы курса английского языка:

1. Грамматические функции и значения слов that, one, it.

2. Пассивный залог (the Passive Voice) видовременных форм Indefinite,

Continuous, Perfect.

3. Функции глаголов to be, to have, to do.

4. Простые неличные формы глагола.

Вариант 1

I. Перепишите следующие предложения, определите в каждом из них

видовременную форму и залог глагола -. Переведите предложения.

1. New material is explained by the teacher at every lesson.

2. New material has been explained by the teacher for then minutes since 9

o’clock in the morning.

DEZHNEV, SEMEN IVANOV

(about 1 605-1 673)

Yakutsk cossack ataman, Arctic seafarer, first to round the northeast cape of

Asia (Cape Dezhnev), pass through Bering Strait, and discover the Anadyr (Bering)

 

 

Sea. He was born in the north Russian frontier town of Velikii Ustyug. He served as

a cossack in Tobol’sk, Eniseisk, and finally (from 1 638) in Yakutsk.

In 1 640-1 64 he was on the Yana River; in 1 642 he crossed to the Upper

Indigirka. In 1 643 he went down the Indigirka to its mouth.

In 1 647, Dezhnev took part in an attempt by Fedor Popov to go by sea from the

mouth of the Kolyma to the mouth of the Anadyr River (i.e., from the Arctic Ocean

to the Pacific), where it was rumored that there was a large walrus rookery and

therefore walrus ivory, but had to turn back because of ice.

The next year Popov, with Dezhnev and a detachment of 90 men, tried again. At

the end of June they went to sea, Dezhnev in command of one of seven kochi.

Along the Arctic coast, four of the kochi became separated from the others, never

to be seen again.

Rumores among the Chukchi a century later, of men like Russians living on the

coast opposite their, i.e., in Alaska, were taken as indicating possible survival of those

lost, and their intermarriage with the Eskimo.

Exploring parties were instructed to keep an eye out for such people as late as the

1 820s, until it was decided that the quest was hopeless.

The remaining three kochi continued eastward, and during August rounded what

they called the Bolshoi Kamennyi Nos’ (Great Rocky Cape) the easternmost point of

the Russian continent, now called Cape Dezhnev.

While rounding the cape, one of the three boats was wrecked, and the men were

distributed between Popov’s and Dezhnev’s boats. In what would later be known as

Bering Strait, Dezhnev landed “on an island” where he saw “toothed people”

(Eskimos).

1. At the beginning of October, when they were leaving the strait, Popov’s

koch disappeared. Storms bore Dezhnev’s koch, with 25 men abroad, to the

coast south of the mouth of the Anadyr. From there, Dezhnev and his men

reached the mouth of the Anadyr in 1 0 weeks.

2. During the winter some of the men tried to ascend the Anadyr but perished.

3. When summer came the surviving 1 2 men, headed by Dezhnev, ascended

the Anadyr and established the post of Anadyrsk.

4. In 1 652, Dezhnev went around the Gulf of Anadyr by boat and discovered

on its north shore a rich rockery of walrus.

5. He stayed on the Anadyr until 1 662, then returned overland o Yakutsk, and

about 1 664 arrived in Moscow with a rich surrly of walrus tusks, part of which

went to the crown. In 1 665 he was made a cossack ataman and assigned to

Yakutsk where he remained until 1 67, when he went again to Moscow. He

died there in 1 673.

BERING VITUS

(690-1 740)

1. Danish seafarer in Russian service; explorer. Born at Horsens, Jutland, in his

youth Bering made several voyages, including one to India on a Dutch ship.

2. On his return in 1 703, recommended to Peter the Great as a man “who has

been in India, and knows his way around”, he was invited to join the Russian

fleet as sub-lieutenant.

3. Little is known of his subsequent voyages or commands, except that he t5ook

part in military action against the Turks in 1 7, was almost certainly in action

against the Swedes.

4. In 1 723 he was retired at his own request, because he had not been given the

rank of captain 1 st rank.

5. But in December 1 724 by order of Peter I he was recalled and appointed to lead

expedition to be organized by order of the Emperor.

BERING VITUS

(680-1 740)

Early in 1 725, Bering and his subordinates Lieutenants Martin Spanberg and

Aleksei Chirikov, with men and supplies, left St. Petersburg and after the usual

difficult passage across Siberia, reached Okhotsk in July 1 727.

On 22 August, 33 expedition members sailed from Okhotsk to Bol’sheretsk,

Kamchatka.

In January 1 728 they started overland to Nizhnekamchatka, arriving 11 March, and

from there to Avacha Bay, where Navigator Elagin had built a camp in anticipation of

Bering arrival.

Using a vessel built there, the Sv. Gavrill, Bering and Chirikov and a crew of 44

sailed on 1 3 July 1 728 from the mouth of Kamchatka river.

From the Gulf of Anadyr Bering sailed north as far as latitude 60 1 8 N, which he

decided was far enough to indicate that the two continents were not joined.
