ROUTE No. 4

1. Andriyivsky Uzviz is one of Kyiv’s oldest streets.

To get here, you can take the funicular.

In ancient times, the street linked the administrative part of the Upper City and Podil, the Lower City of merchants and artisans.

The name has been known since the 18th century.

Nowadays, this stone street is a traditional place for outdoor festivals and concerts and has a variety of interesting art galleries and shops.

What is more, it is a favourite stop for tourists who can find here Ukrainian arts and crafts.

2. Desyatynna Church was the first stone church in Kyiv.

It was built in 989 by the order of Volodymyr the Great.

The church was used by Kievans as the last refuge while the city was being ravaged by the hordes of Batu Khan in 1240, when it finally collapsed from fire.

Nowadays you can find only the outline of the church’s foundation, which was reconstructed with red granite.

The place is fenced in because excavations are under way again.

3. Trubetskoy Estate is a two-storeyed penthoused building that dates back to the 19th century.

In 1867 it was purchased by princess Elizabeth Trubetskaya.

The House tends to attract archaeologists as recent excavations revealed the remnants of a 10th-century pagan temple and a 12th-century stone rotunda.

Nowadays the House accommodates a Department of the Archeological Institute.

4. St. Andrew’s Church was built in 1753 by architect Rastrelli.

The legend says that in ancient times there was a sea down there. When St. Andrew came to the city and erected his cross, the sea drained away. When the church was being built, a stream opened under the altar. That is why the Church does not have any bells not to provoke the sea to flood the area.

It is one of the few buildings to have survived in its original form.

It is a single-domed cathedral with five cupolas.

Nowadays every weekend it gives concerts of classical music.

There is a picturesque path-way around the Cathedral which used to be the favourite place for walks for Mykola Gogol.

5. At No. 15 Andriyivsky Uzviz you can find an interesting building known as the Castle of Richard the Lionheart.

It was built in the early 19th century in the modernised English Gothic style and has some elements typical of fortresses and castles.

It accommodated different Ukrainian painters.

In the 20th century a Ukrainian and American joint venture tried to rebuild it into a hotel.

To the right of the hotel is a flight of iron steps that will take you to a lock-out platform. It provides a magnificent view of Podil, the Dnipro, the bridges, and the plains of the Left Bank.

6. No. 13 Andriyivsky Uzviz is the old Bulgakov family home.

Mikhail Bulgakov, the renowned Russian writer, lived here from 1906 to 1916 and, again, in 1918-1919.

The house is now the Bulgakov Museum and contains the writer’s personal effects and family photos.

The building was erected in 1888 and designed by architect Gardenin.

Here you can see Bulgakov’s memorial plaque.

And that’s the balcony that used to send the sounds of the piano when the family were giving evenings of music and poetry.

7. The One Street Museum is located on the ground floor of a house constructed in the early 20th century in a Modern style.

It houses many historic items of the descent.

They include information about Saint Andrew's Church, the castle of Richard Lionheart, and the many other buildings of the Descent.

It’s also a collection of various works by Ukrainian prominent people.

Al in all, it exhibits books, photos, postcards, documents and so on.
