ROUTE No. 7 Lipki






1. 2 Bankova Street. Initially it was a modest house belonging to General Fedor Trepov.

In 1898 it was purchased by sugar-works owner Simkha Libermann and reconstructed into a small palace in a renaissance style.

The design included a removable ceiling.

According to the Jwish traditions, at Succoth, a national holiday, the Orthodox Jews tend to live in a hut.

So, the ceiling used to be removed and covered by branches.

Since 1953 the town house has been accommodating the Union of Ukrainian Writers.

2. 10 Bankova Street. The legend says in 1901 architect Horodetsky bet that he would build a house on such a steep hill.

In 1903 the apartment building was completed in an Art Nouveay style.

To construct it the German engineer Anton Strauss invented special piles and the Italian sculptor Emilio Sala decorated it in a chimaeric style.

It depicts exotic animals and hunting scenes. In the yard there was a cowshed providing fresh milk to the residents.

Nowadays the House with Chimaeras is a presidential residence for official and diplomatic ceremonies.

3. 11 Bankova Street. This magnificent buildinghouses the General Secretariat of Ukraine.

It is based on two buildings of the headquarters of the Kyiv military district constructed in 1877.In 1930-40s they were joined and extended in a monumental style decoratd with Corinthian porticoes.

After WW 2 it house the Central Committee of the Communist Party.

Nowadays it is a place where the Ukrainian presidents exercise their powers.

4. 23 Luteranska Street. The House of the Weeping Widow was built in 1907 by E.Bradtmann in an early modern style.

It was commissioned by Poltava merchant Sergey Arschavsky.

The centerpiece of the faç ade is a mask of a beautiful female face.

In rainy weather the face produces tears. Hence the name of the town house.

Now it is one of the official residences of the Ukrainian president.

5. 22 Luteranska Street. Since 1822 this neighborhood had been housing the Lutheran Community.

This St. Catherine Protestant Church was built in 1855-57 by Schtrom and Schleifer in a Roman style.

Houses 18 and 20 used to be a Lutheran secondary school for boys and a Lutheran gymnasium for girls.

After its restoration in 2000, the church is in service again.

6. 16 Lutheranska Street. The Sulimovka house was commissioned and designed by landowner Sulima and built in 1833-35.

For some period of time it was believed to be haunted.

However, since 1859 it fhad been unctioning as a charity institution.

It used to have a classical portico and A.Nevsky Church.

In Soviet times it became a usual dwelling-house.
