New York

1. There is no city like New York. It is known as “The City That Never Sleeps” and is the biggest commercial and cultural center in the world. It was founded 300 years ago in the southern part of New York State, at the mouth of the Hudson River.

2. New York is the largest city in the United States. It is known as a “melting pot”, because people of different races and nationalities make up its population. Over 8 million people live in Manhattan. About 13 of every 100 people in New York were born in another country. More than 80 languages are spoken throughout the neighborhoods and streets of the city.

3. New York Manhattan – the heart of the city – is only one of the 5 boroughs in this great metropolis. Manhattan Island was bought from Indians for a handful of trinkets that cost 24 $. Today Manhattan is the centre of business and finance. Numerous skyscrapers house banks and offices of American business.

4. There are thousands of things to do and places to visit for tourists. The most famous landmark must be The Statue of Liberty – a symbol of freedom. It was built in New York Harbor in 1886. It was a gift from the people of France.

5. The Empire State Building, built in 1931 has a viewing floor at the top. Ona clear day tourists can take spectacu­lar photographs of the city from here, but it is especially magical at night.

6. There are many theaters in New York City, where different musicians are performed every day. This is Broadway. There are more than 30 theatres here.

7. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the most famous art museum in New York. It has great art collections from all over the world. Guggenheim Museum has one of the world’s finest collections of contemporary art.

8. Central Park is used by thousands of New Yorkers and visitors every day. This park is larger than Monaco! Families walk their dogs and young people ride their bikes and roller-skate. Some people come here just to relax. They walk, sit in the sun, listen to music, or go to the zoo.

9. New York is one of the leading manufacturing cities in the world. The most important industries are those producing paper products, vehicles, glass, chemicals, machinery. New York has a heavy traffic. The sea encircles many of the city areas and the ships go over or under New York traffic routes.
