De­ p ressi n g the sta rter bu tton (on the ri ght ha nd leba r switch box) energizes the relay, causi ng the contact poi n ts to cl ose wh ich con nects the sta rter motor to the battery. • Discon nect t he starter motor lead wi re a nd remove the starter motor. (R ef er to pages 3-7 a nd 3-1 2.)

NOTE:

If it is difficult to remove the starter motor, loosen the oil hose union bolt on the upper crankcase to provide additional clear­ ance.

• Disassemble the starter motor as shown in the illustration.
