Background

 

This project is for C_______, a college of roughly 1200 students aged between 11 and 18. There are girls and boys and they sit the English GCSE and A-Level examinations. They have a strong tradition of doing well in maths and run various maths clubs. Staff run sessions on Wednesday afternoons and all students are welcome to attend most of them. There are some specialist sessions that only allow girls to attend like the " Girl's Group".

 

Methods Currently in Use

 

Mr. Rakshi runs an after school draughts club in room S110. The club has been running for 5 years and is very popular with first year boy students. There are 3 sets meaning 6 players can play at the same time. There are often many more students in the room than 6, meaning students often have to wait to play with the boards. Many of the students aren't aware of the rules and there is often conflict with students accusing other students of cheating. Mr Rakshi reminds the students of the rules, but they often forget. During the summer the numbers of people attending the club decrease and sometimes there are less than 6, if 5 players turn up then only 2 games can take place, whilst the odd students waits their turn. Recently there has been an attempt to set up a league and Mr. Rakshi using a notebook to record the scores of students playing each other. The winning student at the end of the term will be awarded a book token. Sometimes Mr. Rakshi is absent and games take place but the scores aren't recorded. As the club has been running for 5 years one of the Draught has some pieces missing, Mr. Rakshi has replaced them with coins wrapped in coloured paper.

 

Mr Rakshi keeps track of the league of the best Draught's players in the school, he has a spreadsheet that looks like this:

There are specific league games that are recorded on this table, the overall winner is then calculated at the end of the year. Mr Rakshi also tries to keep track of who is winning the most games overall, noting down wins, draws and losses of each player on his electronic tablet. He doesn't always see each game, so this data is not always up to date:

 

Aliyah - 5Wins, 3Draws, 3 Losses. Aminah - 1Wins, 1Draws, 3 Losses. Jahangir - 2Wins, 1Draws, 1 Losses. Pete - 0Wins, 3Draws, 1 Losses.
