РАС Wins Again Last year, Scotland-based Glenmore Jewellery became the fortieth member of the organisation РАС (Protection Against Copying) to take successful legal action to protect its products. Glenmore, which sells hand-made jewellery designed and produced by local artists, was angry to discover a competitor, Nevis, selling copies of these designs, Nevis has now agreed to stop selling the products, as well as to pay Glenmore" s legal costs. Another Scottish company, Highland Design, also asked for PAC’s help last year; as a result, Grampian Gifts has agreed to stop selling glass designs similar to products made by Highland Design. Grampian will also pay Highland Design 50% of the profit it has made on these ranges over the last four years. ‘Recently there’s been a sharp rise in the number of reports received from members, ’ says James Ellis, PAC’s Chief Executive. 'This demonstrates that designers clearly feel we can help them. If they discover copies of their designs at exhibitions, for example, they are advised to contact us immediately.’ РАС, with over 700 members world-wide, has an almost 100% success rate in legal action taken to defend the interests of the individuals and companies it represents. China car sales rise Edward Zong, China's Porsche salesman, is ready for the biggest boom in the car business since Henry Ford. Only 1 percent of the 1.3 billion Chinese own a car, but sales are 50 percent more than a year ago. As a result, the country is now the biggest market for some car manufacturers, and you can read about the end of the 'bicycle age’ in Chinese newspapers. In Beijing alone, about 4, 000 new cars arrive every week and 600, 000 new drivers will get licences this year. This is a rise of 40 percent. Sales of 3 million vehicles this year will make China the fourth largest market in the world. Some carmakers need Chinese consumers. Volkswagen will sell more cars in China than in Germany this year, and Porsche hopes to double its sales to 60 cars next year. When Mr Zong was young, children played ball games on Beijing’s big roads. People didn't own private cars and only government drivers, such as Mr Zong's father, went faster than bicycles. These days Mr Zong waits in car traffic for an hour on his way to work every morning. The millions of bicycles cause great problems for other traffic. The government plans to destroy many old areas and change single-lane roads into eight-lane highways. This year, Mr Zong purchased his first car, for £ 12, 000 - a Jeep Cherokee. He wanted a Porsche, but with a price of more than £ 90, 000, this is a distant dream for him. В Китае рост продаж автомобилей

You just need to take one plastic card with you. With credit cards, you get a bill at the end of each month. If you pay the bill immediately, you don’t have to pay the credit card company any money. If you delay paying some or all of the bill, however, the credit card company charges you extra. (F)
3. In America it’s the dollar and in Russia it’s die rouble. Many countries have their own ‘currency’ - their own money. This means that when you travel from, say, Russia to the USA you have to exchange your roubles for dollars, as shops in America don’t accept roubles. Many countries in Europe, such as France, Germany and Italy, now have the same currency, called the euro. This means that Italians travelling to Germany don’t have to worry about exchanging money when they travel.(E)
4. In Britain, people who work receive either a ‘salary’ or a ‘w'age’.They are both money that workers receive, but there are small differences between them. If you get a salary, you are paid at the end of each month. A job with a salary of £ 20, 000 means that you get that amount over a year, not each month. A wage is usually paid at the end of each week. A factory worker in Britain might get a weekly wage of about £ 300. (B)
5. Most people do not have enough money to pay in cash if diey want to buy a house or a flat. Because of this, they have to borrow money from a bank. The name for the loan that most people get when dfey buy property is a ‘mortgage’. In Britain, it’s common to get a mortgage for up to twenty-five years. In other countries, it’s more common to get a mortgage that lasts for only ten or fifteen years. When you’ve finished paying your mortgage, die building is yours! (D)
6. What would the world be like if we didn’t have money? It would be a very different place! We would probably have to exchange different things to get what we needed. For example, imagine that you needed some bread. You would go to a baker, but you couldn’t buy the bread with money. You would have to give the baker something diat the baker needed. If you were a farmer, perhaps you could offer the baker some fresh vegetables. It would be very difficult to get everything we needed, wouldn’t it? (C)
