In the Restaurant
Sam: Aren’t you hungry? Carry: Oh, yes, we are. Lucy: And I’m awfully thirsty. Sam: Would you like a glass of orange juice? Lucy: Thanks. I’d love one. I like orange juice very much. Sam: And I prefer apple juice. Carry: All juices are good for health: tomato, apple, apricot and, of course, pine- apple juice. I like pine-apples best of all. Sam: What shall we have? Carry: The three-course meal, I suppose. Lucy: Well, you choose. Sam: Let’s start with salad, then chicken soup, fish and chips. Carry: I think, I’ll have some peas, fruit and a cup of tea without sugar. Lucy: Are you slimming? Carry: Yes, I am. Lucy: What does your diet allow you? Carry: Well, a little meat or fish, eggs, some cheese or milk, a lot of vegetables: lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, very few potatoes, a lot of fruit. No cakes, no ice-cream, no chocolate and very little salt. Sam: I bet your producer likes only slim actors and actresses. Carry: He does indeed. I have to be on a diet. I don’t live to eat but I eat to live. Lucy: Tastes differ, of course. Sam: Are you a vegetarian? Lucy: I think, none of us is a vegetarian. Good roast-beef is much tastier than watery vegetables. Sam: I must confess I like good food, an occasional beer, cheerful people. Carry: Is this your keep-fit programme? Sam: Yes, it is. My motto is: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is”. Lucy: You’re not a fitness fanatic, are you? The advice of my doctor is quite different. Don’t take a taxi, he says. Walk to your work each day. Ignore the lift. Climb the stairs. Don’t eat bread and butter. Take two cold showers a day. Do plenty of housework. Stop drinking. Give up smoking. Exercise your memory. Train your body. Sam: Your recommendations are very useful, Doctor. Lucy: Glad you think so. Carry: In short, early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise. Lucy: You’re quite right. I usually get up at 6.30, do my morning exercises. It takes me half an hour. Carry: How many meals a day do you have? Lucy: I have four meals a day: a light breakfast, lunch, dinner – the heaviest meal, and cold supper. As a rule, I don’t eat sweets. They are fattening. Sam: Have you ever tasted Mexican dishes? Lucy: No, I haven’t. I’ve never been to Mexico. Sam: What do you think of spicy food? Carry: I avoid it. I prefer everything natural. Sam: A cigarette? Lucy: Oh, no. Carry: No, thanks. Sam: A drop of brandy? Carry: I’m off alcohol. Sam: Isn’t it boring sometimes to follow these strict rules? Carry: They are not strict. If you’re in perfectly good health, you can work well and have more pleasures of life. Lucy: Why not to form good habits? III
