Svetlana Ter-Minasova says that " the future of the world is in the hands of foreign language teachers and translators and interpreters, because we know that peace and friendship and cooperation and therefore the progress of mankind can­not be provided by politicians or statesmen". Do you agree with this idea? Why? Why not? Can you give any examples from world history which support this statement?

2. When you study a foreign language, it is necessary to learn not only the grammar system and peculiarities of pronun­ciation but also the culture of the nation, its mentality and ideology. Why is it so important? Give your reasons.

3. According to Svetlana Ter-Minasova one of the characteris­tic feature of Russians is their love for foreign languages. Can you name any other unique features of the Russian na­tional character?

4. What are the ways to raise the interest of the British in the Russian language and Russian culture? Does it depend upon common people or only upon the political situation and politicians?
