Possible time of duration.
• • Check both the two rocker arm shafts on the intake side turn. NOTE: When the rocker arm shaft moves from the low to high speed position, the turning angle will be approximatel y 140 degrees in the direction opposite to the engine's normal operation.
• Remove the seat. • Remove the fuel tank. • Drain coolant from the cooling system. • Remove the water hose. • Remove the thermostat inlet connector bracket CD. • Remove the radiator inlet hose. • Loosen the radiator mounting bolt. • Disconnect the spark plug caps. • Remove the ignition coil. • Disconnect the throttle cable at the handlebars. • Disconnect the starter cable.
I A CAUTION I After the adjustment has been completed, assemble the removed parts in the reverse order of disassembly procedure. Check for coolant leakage, oil leakage and ease of engine starting.
• • Remove the oil control actuator.
• • Remove the cylinder head cover.
•
NOTE: * The clearance measurement for intake side must be performed for 24 places in total, eight places each for LO and HI side valve clearances and another eight places for sub rocker arm play. Perform the operation in accordance with the following " INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE." * For the inspection and adjustment of exhaust valve clearance, refer to GSF400 Service Manual. Exhaust side valve clearance (cold): 0.20-0.25 mm INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE #1 and #2 cylinder intake side measurement
(See page 20.)
Bring the intake cam to the position as illustrated. #3 and #4 cylinder intake side measurement
(See page 26.)
Bring the intake cam to the position as illustrated.
Inspection of LO side clearance (See page 20.) • Measure the valve clearance with the rocker shaft turned all the way until it stops in the cam's normal tuning direction. OK NG Tappet shim adjustment (See page 21.) ---'--------------------- LO side Inspection of HI side clearance (See page 22.) • Measure the valve clearance with the rocker shaft turned all the way until it stops in the direction opposite to the cam's normal tuning.
OK NG Sub rocker arm shim adjustment (See page 22.)

LO SIDE OPERATING
Inspection of sub rocker arm play (See page 24.) • Measure the sub rocker arm play with the rock er shaft turned all the way until it stops in the cam's normal tuning direction.

INSPECTION ON #1 AND #2 CYLINDER INTAKE SIDE • Bring the line on the intake camshaft right side end face to the position as illustrated.
• IMili 09917-13231: Rocker shaft turning wrench NOTE: In LO position, set the special tool so that its handle points rearward.
• With the rocker arm shaft turned counterclockwise using the special tool (Rocker shaft turning wrench) all the way until it stops, check for the LO side clearance. • During inspection, hold the special tool handle so that the rocker arm shaft may not move from the LO position.
LO side valve clearance (cold) Inlet side: 0.10-0.20mm (0.004-0.008 in) I.A CAUTION I * When the LO side valve clearance is found to be with in the specification, check the HI side valve clearance. (See page 22.) * If the measurement is out of the specification, per form the tappet shim adjustment. (See page 21.)

• Turn the rocker arm shaft counterclockwise all the way un til it stops using the special tool (Rocker shaft turning wrench).
•
• Tappet shim (four places)
• • Replace the shim referring to the tappet shim selection table. (See pages 27 and 28.)
* For one cylinder, left-and-right difference of the LO side valve clearance must be within 0.05 mm (0.002 in). * When the LO side tappet shim has been replaced, make sure to check the HI side valve clearance. (See page 22.)
• With the rocker arm shaft turned clockwise using the spe cial tool (Rocker shaft turning wrench) all the way until it stops, check for the HI side valve clearance. • During inspection, hold the special tool handle so that the rocker arm shaft may not move from the HI position.
