He should put on a garland saying;






oà karabhä jana å ñ iù

gä yatré chandaù

ç ré bhä gavaté devatä

srag bandhane viniyogaù

oà ç ré ù asi mayi bhä gavaté ramasva

“You are prosperity. Establish that in me.”

He should put on shoes, saying:

oà jamadagni å ñ i

virä ò gä yatré chandaù

ç ré upendrä cyutau devate

upä nata-paridhä ne viniyogaù

oà netrau stho nayata mä m

“You are my eyes. Please lead me to the Supreme Lord.”

He should receive a bamboo daë ò a of his own height saying:

oà parameç vara å ñ iù

gä yatré chandaù

ç ré keç avo devatä

daë ò a-grahaë e viniyogaù

nä rä yaë asyas tvaà vihito gandharvo’si upamä ava

“You are made by Nä rä yaë a. You are the revealer of truth. Please be favorable to me.”

He should place (tie) his deerskin and old yajï opavé ta on the daë ò a.

He should go and look at the ä cä rya, saying:

oà sanandana å ñ iù

triñ ö up chandaù

ç ré é ç varä cä ryo devatä

ä cä ryapariñ ad bé kñ aë e viniyogaù

oà yakñ am iva cakñ usaù priyo vo bhü yä sam

“Let me be graced by you, by your glance upon me.”

He should sit beside the ä cä rya and place the fingers of his right hand in front of his mouth, so that the breath touches his hand. He should say:

oà karabhä jana å ñ iù

sä vitré chandaù

sanä tano devatä

mukhya-prä ë a-sparç ane viniyogaù

oà oñ ö hä pidhä nä nakulé danta parimitaù pariù

jihve mä vihvalo vä caà cä ruà ä dyeha vä daya

“Oh tongue, covered by fickle lips and surrounded by teeth, do not stray, speak sweet words for me here today.”

The ä cä rya should worship the graduate by washing his feet etc.

The graduate should approach a cart yoked with two cows. He should touch the two poles which fix the yoke to the cart and mount the car, saying the three lines of the verse:

oà nä rada å ñ iù

anuñ ö up chandaù

ç ré viñ ë uù devatä

rathä bhimarñ aë e viniyogaù

oà vanaspate vé dvaì go hi bhü yä ù

asmatsakhä prataraë aù suvé raù

gobhiù sannadho’si vé ò ayasva

“Oh Lord of the forest, be steady. Oh friend to us, yoked to the cows, full of strength, you lead us to the Lord. Impart strength to us.”

He should sit on the cart saying the last line of the verse:

oà parameç vara å ñ iù

gä yatré chandaù

ç ré viñ ë uù devatä

rathä bhimarñ aë e viniyogaù

oà ä sthä tä te jayatu jetvä ni

“May he who has mounted you (the cart) conquer the enemies.”

Driving the cart to the East or North he should go some distance, then turn to the right and return towards the ä cä rya.

The ä cä rya should worship him again with footwash etc.

The father (of the graduate) should offer the ä cä rya and vaiñ ë ava brä hmaë as dakñ ië ä. Everyone should be fed. To allay any offenses, the participants should perform Kå ñ ë a Nä ma Japa and pay obeisances to Kå ñ ë a and the Vaiñ ë avas.

This is the Samä vartana rite.

Thus ends the book “Sat Kriyä Sä ra Dé pikä ”.
